Kara No Kyoukai (Garden of Sinners) Review

Personally I loved this anime.  The only thing I disliked about this series of OVA’s is how short it was. Some episodes are obviously better than others, but for the most part, they are all done really well. Although it takes place in a modern city, it has a surreal feel with a lot of dark and gory action.

The story follows a teenage girl Shiki through Tokyo. She possesses the mystic eyes of death which allows her to see the origin (starting point) of any living or non-living thing. By slicing the origin with anything (even a spoon works) she is able to kill it (if it was a Shikiperson) or break it (if it was an object, a locked lock would become unlocked, etc).

There are countless fights with her fighting regular people, zombies, freak wizards with crazy powers, and other weird shit. Also there is a love story going on if you’re into that kind of thing.

I’m a bit all over the place in this review but one really fucking cool thing that we find out is, Shiki is pretty much a god. I’m giving you an intense spoiler here (and it really doesn’t affect the series so it doesn’t matter) but eventually we find out that she is directly connected to the origin herself. She can change the laws of reality simply by willing it to be so. Talk about badass!!

This series and the Rurouni Kenshin OVAs are what really introduced me into the darker side of anime.  And I’ve never gone back. That’s kind of a lie but these two animes in particular opened my eyes towards the more realistic, bloody, emotional animes.

What’s good about this anime in a few words? Great art, great fight-scenes, very realistic, deep characters, awesome world!

Overall Rating: 9.4/10
